Nezach Zecharia STaM Institute

Nezach Zecharia is the oldest and most experienced institute in Israel for all your scribal needs.

STaM, which is an acronym for Sifrei Torah (Torah scrolls), Tefillin, and Mezuzot, constitute an integral part of every Jew’s life and have accompanied our people through time and space: across centuries, on each doorpost, in prayer, and in every synagogue. Each scroll must be hand-written with a special quill and ink on genuine parchment in accordance with many detailed laws.

Unfortunately, there is hardly any organized rabbinical supervision over the production and sale of STaM. Although recently there has been more awareness of these issues, the market is still full of non-kosher merchandise, written by non-certified or irreligious people who don’t know what they’re doing, or even by women or Arabs. Not to speak of photocopied   tefillin and mezuzot that are flooding the market and causing innocent people to sin.

A genuine God-fearing scribe must devote a great deal of time to studying the laws and acquiring the professional skills. He cannot compete with the above cheap merchandise, and is forced to leave the profession. Surely this causes much distress in the Heavens above.

Our goals are as follows:

  1. To increase the awareness of STaM amongst all types of Jews.
  2. To insist that all the scribes who write STaM must be God-fearing, certified, and fluent in the laws.
  3. To keep the prices to a reasonable level.
  4. To publicize cases of fraud in STaM or non-certified scribes.
  5. To work to have STaM included in the “Law for Prevention of Kashrut Fraud”.
  6. To maintain the interests of certified scribes and improve their conditions.
  7. To publish articles by experts.
  8. To develop technological means to ease the scribe’s work.
  9. To purchase STaM equipment in bulk in order to reduce the final cost.

At the Nezach Zecharia STaM Institue, we have a team of learned and God-fearing expert Sofrim (scribes) and Magihim (people who check STaM) who have been certified by qualified rabbis and are strict and meticulous in their work.

The Institute carries out advanced computer checking using the most up-to-date software, and closes tefillin with the best-quality finish.

The Institute follows rabbinical direction for every question that arises.

In every generation our sages have warned us about the severeness of neglecting to ensure the integrity and kashrut of STaM.
